Lifeguard Management

Learn the practice associated with an aquatic management position. Topics include staff hiring, training techniques and management procedures.

Prerequisite: current Lifeguard Training certificate from any organization.

Lifeguard Training

This program offers the highest quality training standards in skill instruction, professional life-guarding responsibilities, first aid and CPR training. Participants learn job specific skills including injury prevention and caring for a victim of spinal injury. This class is recommended for students considering taking the Lifeguard Instructor course.

Prerequisite: Individuals must be 15 years old by last date of class; swim 500 yards continuously using these strokes in the following order: 200 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing propellant kick; 100 yards breaststroke; 200 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and/or breaststroke. The last 200 yards may be mixture of front crawl or breaststroke, dive a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10 pond object and return it to the surface, and swim 20 yards back to the starting point.
Certificate Issued: Lifeguard Training/First Aid, valid for three years; CPR for the professional Rescuer, valid for one year

Instructor Courses

Fundamentals of Instructor Training

This course introduces instructor candidates to the history, structure and activities of the American Red Cross. It also prepares instructor candidates to teach American Red Cross specialty courses to diverse populations, and introduces instructor candidates to the policies and procedures of the American Red Cross, to ensure course consistency, quality and appropriate reporting.

Certificates Issued: Fundamentals of Instructor Training, valid for one year

Lifeguard Instructor

Participants will learn to teach the new Lifeguard Training course and its accompanying components: AED Essentials, Oxygen Administration for the Professional Rescuer and Preventing Disease Transmission. Though not required, the Lifeguard Training class may be helpful precursor to this course.

Prerequisites: Individuals must be 17 years old by last day of class; Fundamentals of Instructor Training certificate issued within the past 12 months of current Red Cross instructor certification; all Lifeguard Training course pre-requisites; demonstrated knowledge of CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid and Lifeguard Training information; skill scenarios for CPR, first aid and aquatic victims.

Certificate Issued: Waterfront Lifeguard Instructor, valid for 15-24 months

Waterfront Lifeguard Instructor

Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructors can become certified to train lifeguards in the skills needed to work in an open-water environment. Though not required, the Waterfront Lifeguard class may be a helpful precursor to this course.

Prerequisites: Current American Lifeguard Instructor certification; demonstrated knowledge of Waterfront Lifeguarding skills and information.

Certificate Issued: Waterfront Lifeguard Instructor, valid for 15-24 months

Water Safety Instructor

Becoming certified to teach American Red Cross swimming and water safety courses. Though not required, the Stroke Improvement class may be a helpful precursor to this course.

Prerequisites: Individuals must be 17 years old by last day of class; Fundamentals of Instructor Training certificate issued within the past 12 months or current Red Cross instructor certificate; demonstrated knowledge of Community Water Safety info; perform the following strokes for 50 yards each, showing technical accuracy: front crawl, back crawl, sidestroke, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, butterfly (10 yards); long shallow dive into a min of 9 feet of water, surface dive, retrieve a 10-pound object from 9 feet of water; head splint in shallow water; standing front dive from deck; wading assist; throwing assist; reaching assist.

Certificate Issued: Water Safety Instructor, valid for 15-24 months

First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor

Learn to train students in Adult, Child and Infant CPR, as well as use an Automates External Defibrillator and First Aid. Students will review course materials and will learn presentation techniques, evaluating methods and procedures for preparing Red Cross reports. Basic level knowledge and skills will be tested on the first day of class. Though not required the Adult, Child and Infant CPR with First Aid and AED class may be a helpful precursor to this course.

Prerequisites: Individuals must be at least 17 years old by last day of class; Fundamentals of Instructor Training certificate issued within the past 12 months or current Red Cross instructor certification; demonstrated proficiency in First Aid/CPR and AED skills.

Certification Issued: First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor, valid for 15-24 months; or Workplace Training: Standard First Aid Instructor, valid for 15-24 months

Babysitter's Training Instructor Bridging

Currently certified Red Cross instructors can become certified to teach the Babysitter's Training program by attending this course.

Prerequisites: Current Instructor certification in any American Red Cross course which includes First Aid and CPR.

Preventing Disease Transmission Instructor Bridging

Expand your teaching skills by becoming an instructor of Preventing Disease Transmission. This course will help fulfill an important part of meeting the educational component of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Blood borne Pathogens standard that is often needed in the workplace.

Prerequisites: Must hold a current American Red Cross Instructor certificate in any national program

Certificate Issued: Preventing Disease Transmission Instructor, valid for 15-24 months

Refunds and Cancellations

A refund will be issued for student cancellations made at least three (3) business days prior to the start of the course, less a $5 administration fee. American Red Cross reserves the right to cancel classes due to insufficient registration or inclement weather. Scheduled participants will be notified of cancellation via telephone two business days prior to the date of the class and may then ask to be rescheduled or receive a complete refund.
