New Online Introduction to Disaster Services Course Available

Training Development and Delivery is pleased to announce the release of the new Introduction to Disaster Services (ARC 3066) online course. This course can be accessed by the public through the Volunteer page on www.redcross.org.

The purpose of this basic level Disaster Services online course is to engage and inspire the public to actively participate in supporting American Red Cross disaster response. This self-study course will introduce learners to American Red Cross Disaster Services and allow them to discover how volunteers support critical missions, and it also helps potential volunteers explore ways they can become involved with their local chapter.


 

All Disaster Services classes are free and will be held at the Ottawa County Chapter at 270 James Street, Holland.
Pre registration is required.

Introduction to Disaster Services (ARC 3066): Overview of the American Red Cross disaster program, the people it serves, and the network of services with the community.

DAT Orientation (ARC 9500): Trains participants to provide immediate emergency services to local families affected by a disaster. Course participants are given the opportunity to join a Disaster Action Team.

Prerequisites: Introduction to Disaster Services, Family Service, Community Services Overview.

Disaster Assessment (Local): This locally designed course teaches Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers how to conduct assessments when responding for fires and other local disaster. Course time is approximately 3 hours. Pre-requisite is Introduction to Disaster Services.

Community Services Overview (ARC 3068-1): Informs the volunteer what services are provided on the job in Mass Care such as sheltering, feeding, and bulk distribution of supplies. To work with the community in developing listings of shelters and food resources needed in time of disaster. Pre-requisite is Introduction to Disaster Services.

Please note: Disaster classes require a minimum of six people enrolled seven days prior to the start of the class. If enrollment is less than six, the class will be cancelled and those who are enrolled will be notified. Register early!

Family Service: Providing Emergency Assistance (ARC 3072): Trains the volunteers to interview the clients and provide vouchers for emergency needs such as food, shelter, and clothing on a local level. To establish the client’s additional needs and network them with community resources. Pre-requisite is Introduction to Disaster Services.

Logistics - An Overview (ARC 3071-1): Provides basic information about the activities and processes of the Logistics function in support of an ARC disaster relief operation. Participants will learn about the skills, abilities, and knowledge needed by Logistics workers and how they can get started in their local chapter. Course time is approximately 3 hours. Pre-requisite is Introduction to Disaster Services.

Logistics Simulation (ARC 3071): Training provides participants an opportunity to practice the knowledge and skills needed to run a successful logistical operation in their local chapter. Course time is approximately 4 hours. Pre-requisites are Introduction to Disaster Services and Logistics - An Overview.

Weapons of Mass Destruction/Terrorism (ARC 3079-2): Trains the volunteers to identify some of the potential targets of terrorists, types of weapons, health concerns, First Responder agencies, what has been learned from past experiences, and become familiar with the Incident Command System. Course time is approximately 4 hours. Pre-requisite is Introduction to Disaster Services.

Shelter Operations (ARC 3068-11): Trains the Red Cross and other agencies' staff and volunteers to effectively and sensitively manage shelter operations as a team, to meet the needs of people displaced as a result of a disaster. Course time is approximately 3.5 hours. Pre-requisites: 1)Introduction to Disaster Services and 2) Community Services Overview.

Shelter Simulation (ARC 3068-12): Training provides the opportunity to practice the knowledge and skills needed to run a successful shelter operation. Participants work in teams to open, operate and close a typical shelter operation. Participants MUST bring their Shelter Operations handbook. Course time is approximately 4 hours. Pre-requisites: Introduction to Disaster Services, Community Services Overview, Shelter Operations

ERV ‘S: Ready, Set, Roll
The purpose of this basic level course is to prepare volunteers to safely and effectively use and emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) and its equipment to meet feeding and other service needs of people affected by disaster.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services, Community Services Overview
Recommended: Logistics: An Overview

You must also have: First Aid/CPR Certification, Valid driver’s licenses, Department of Motor Vehicle Report, Defensive Driving Course Certificate

The cost of this defense driving class is $15.95 and can be purchased with a credit card when you access this link. Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive a certificate.

This course is completed in two parts. Part one is a self-study. Please contact the Chapter to arrange to pick up the take and workbook.

Part two is a driving test. After taking the self-study part and furnishing copies of the above prerequisites call the Chapter to make an appointment to take the driving test.

Public Affairs in Disaster
The purpose of this course is to assist Red Cross paid and volunteer staff in working with the Public Affairs function on a local disaster relief operation and to initiate the Public Affairs function on a State or Major disaster relief operation. Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services
Recommended: Family Service: Providing Emergency Assistance, Fundamentals of chapter Disaster Operation Management

Workshop for Development of community Disaster Education Presenters
This workshop prepares volunteers to deliver quality Community Disaster Education (CDE) presentations. It provides information on ways to overcome disaster denial issues to motivate individual and family disaster preparedness actions. This workshop is open to those interested in presenting CDE information to the public in a variety of settings.
Prerequisite: A commitment to deliver quality Community Disaster Education presentations to the public.
