Lifeguard and Lifeguard Instructing

Lifeguard

Purpose: To teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drownings and injuries.
Prerequisites: 
Minimum age of 15
Swim 300 yards continuously (To be completed in 1 minute, 40 seconds) Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststrokes, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
Length: 31 hours, 15 minutes (including the precourse session)
 
Lifeguard Instructor

Purpose: To train instructor candidates to teach basic level Lifeguarding, Waterfront Lifeguarding, Waterpark Lifeguarding, and Shallow Water Attendant (all including first aid), Lifeguarding Management, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Administering Emergency Oxygen, “Bloodborne Pathogens Training: Preventing Disease Transmission” and Basic Water Rescue courses. Instructor candidates also will become familiar with “GuardStart: Lifeguarding Tomorrow” and the Water Safety presentations.
Prerequisites: 
Be at least 17 years of age on or before the last scheduled day of the instructor course
Possess a “Fundamentals of Instructor Training Certificate” issued within the last year or posses a current national Health and Safety Services Instructor Authorization Certificate.
Successfully complete the precourse session. This includes passing the precourse written exam with a score of 80 percent or higher for each of the three sections while demonstrating competency in the precourse skills and scenarios evaluation.
Length: 26 hours (including precourse session) 
 
Refunds and Cancellations
American Red Cross reserves the right to cancel classes due to insufficient registration or inclement weather. Scheduled participants will be notified of cancellation via telephone two business days prior to the date of the class and may then ask to be rescheduled or receive a complete refund.

Classes for groups
Groups of 10 or more can be trained at your worksite, school, community organization or other location.
